Each song on the album is downright irresistible. Without even having met this amazing group of men or seeing them live, I could feel down to my nerve endings how their incredible lineup builds off of each other's creativity. Interconnected and yet each reflecting their own personalities are Mike Kaz on bass and dual guitarists Joe Nicolazzo and Seth Salois. Jay Carvalho reflects his passion on the drums, pouring his soul on his kit. Salois has a rich hauntingly beautiful voice that right away reminded me of the singer of Volbeat, truly unique and something otherworldly. I was thoroughly delighted when I took a listen and it now enjoys regular rotation on my drives. When I had received it in the mail I figured it was a death or thrash metal CD.

There’s only one thing left to say at this point head over to and give a listen for yourself. I’m not saying that Psycle necessarily sounds like these bands, but with the big drums, heavy guitar, and strong vocals, they remind me of Staind, Godsmack, Tool, and Nickleback. No need to worry, by the end of the track it builds back to where we left off where Salois’ vocals are slightly reminiscent of the very early Nickelback release, The State, from 1998. They manage to keep the album upbeat, even on songs like the drum driven “Break,” which is sad lyrically.

All four songs on this album feel as if they belong together, making it an album you can listen to straight through, with no skips.“Face the Fire” has a very cool mix, starting with guitar on the left, vocals in the center, and drums on the right. That may sound like bad thing, but believe me, it’s not. Psycle only strays so far, going a bit heavier, as well as a little more mellow. “Long Way Down” sets a solid middle ground for the album. At some point, vocalist Seth Salois approaches a Maynard Keenan feel. The chorus contains big ringing chords which compliment the melodic vocals perfectly. Psycle eases us into things with the opening track “Long Way Down,” building on a strong groove. Giant, melodic, hard driving, and big drums these are a few things that come to mind while listening to Surfaces. They have now teamed up with Pipeline Entertainment and have released a new EP, Surfaces, mixed and mastered by Chris Piquette from No Boundaries Studios out of Providence, R.I. Now based out of Providence, Rhode Island, this four piece rock band has reformed with longtime drummer Jay Carvalho, Mike Kaz on bass, Joe Nicolazzo on guitar, and adding Seth Salois on Vocals/Guitar. Psycle was formed in 1999 in Castleton, Vermont, and remained active in the New England area and beyond before disbanding in 2011. Let's hope this is just the beginning for a band with a lot of potential. As with all the songs, you can hear the contribution from each of the band members yet they all hang together well. 'Break' rounds out the record and shows the band can bring the fury but they do it in measured blasts. 'Long Way Down' slows things down with a slinky vibe that adds some color to the record - nice controlled solo by Nicolazzo here. Name a band today with a great vocalist and you could slot this guy in there with any of them - he's that good. There's some nice crunchy guitar to kick off 'Face the Fire' and then, Salois' voice takes centre stage. If they can write more stuff like this, they will have a long career. The song starts off with some jangly guitar and a tasty little bass line meandering about above a pounding beat, Then the amazing voice of Salois takes over and man, can this guy sing! The simple but effective chorus also shows the guys can construct a memorable song that will stay with you past the finish line. 'The Road I'm On' was my introduction to the band and a fine one it was. The record contains just four songs but all are in the well-above good to excellent category. Their debut EP Surfaces can be summed up by the well-worn phrase, all killer, no filler. Band members include Seth Salois (vocals/guitar), Jayson Spyne (drums), Joe Nicolazzo (lead guitar) and Mike Kaz (bass/vocals). Psycle is a Rhode Island-based band that plays solid, straight-ahead rock & roll the way it's meant to be played. After wading through a ton of bands that have product out due only to the fact that they have a pulse, it's always satisfying to hear a real honest to goodness band with both of those qualities. Two things that can't be faked or jumbled together however are good songs and a great voice. With technology today, it's easy to put together a competent set of music with a few twists of the knobs.
